You should watch James Ivory's 'The Remains of the Day'

The Remains of the Day (1993) -No spoilers!

With a rating of 7.9, IMBD's description of this movie is: A butler who sacrificed body and soul to service in the years post World War II realizes too late how misguided his loyalty has been.

Now that doesn't sound too appetizing. I watched this movie about two nights ago intrigued by the fact that Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson were a sole combination in this movie with an obvious cherry on top- Hugh Grant. I neither like nor care about these actors but apparently superficial Hollywood does (or did, might I add?) and I made the decision that watching something from the 90's would be much better than watching the typical Hollywood 2012 crap they make these days. To the point- I'm a sucker for oldies although I wasn't excited to start watching this at all.

You need to be patient to watch The Remains of the Day or else you'll hate it. A dreading two-hour duration and slow pace makes it seem awfully boring at the start but I promise if you stick with it- it's worth it. I haven't read the novel yet, I know, I know, bad move on my part- however, I'm considering it after I'm free of study loads this year. The protagonist-Anthony Hopkins- is a very hidden character, extremely professional at all times and NEVER lets his guard down. I believe he is the type that builds and builds walls around him, so much that nobody can break or penetrate them! I don't personally see this as a negative aspect although I was hoping for some romance with the beautiful Emma Thompson (her hair is amazing). I don't particularly like her character too much though. She should have bit back and fought for what she wanted but instead she decided to conform. Overall, this movie is worth two hours of your time because it definitely is quite compelling once you reach the ending and I'm sure you will take away a lesson or two from it as well. It portrays altogether some very common themes of humanity such as pride, being the only one blind towards our surroundings and mistakes, polishing our memories and erasing the bad and the ugly and of course sacrificing everything you own and everything you could have had for something that deemed responsible and worthy at the time. Anthony Hopkins performs brilliantly and this movie is forever on my top 100.

 7/10
